These instructions apply to RTG Bills Online, the online version of RTG Bills. RTG also offers a Windows PC version of RTG Bills.

You can convert your firm's data in RTG Bills Online to the PC version. After conversion, you will no longer need the online version.

Conversion requires these steps:

1. Download a backup of the RTG Bills Online data.
2. Install special conversion software that converts the online data in the backup file into a special text format.
3. Run the conversion software.
4. Install an update to RTG Bills on the PC to install an import program.
5. Run the import program to replace any PC data with the imported data.

A Supervisor must sign in to download a backup:

Supervisor Menu > Actions > Back Up RTG Bills Data

Download the backup and make sure you know where it is, which is usually the Downloads folder used by your web browser. You will need to move this file, firmbackup.zip, in the next step.

Download the installer for the conversion software:

Click to download Convert to PC installer

Double-click the installer to install the conversion software. By default, unless you choose otherwise, the program is installed in your Documents folder, in a new ConvertToPC folder. You should see a shortcut on your desktop named Convert To PC for RTG Bills Online.

Open the Documents folder. Open the ConvertToPC folder. Open the data_in folder. Move the file you downloaded from RTG Bills Online, firmbackup.zip, into the data_in folder.

Double-click the Convert To PC for RTG Bills Online shortcut to start the conversion program.

The program requires this software from Microsoft:

Visual C++ 2015 Redistributable (x86)

You may have it installed already, in which case the conversion program will start. If an error occurs, download and install the software from the Microsoft website. Click the link above to go to the Microsoft download page. (If the link is no longer valid, search for the name.) The file you want to download is named vc_redist.x86.exe.

Once you have the Microsoft software, start the conversion program (Convert To PC for RTG Bills Online). You will see the Export Firm Data page. Click the Export button.

After a pause while the data is converted, you will see the Results of Firm Export page. If it says SUCCESS, then it has created the file firmdata.zip in the data_out folder. Click Done to exit the conversion program.

In order to read the converted data into RTG Bills, you must install an update. The update is named Import Firm Data from RTG Bills Online. See How To Install Updates for step-by-step instructions.

Start RTG Bills and choose:

File > Tools > Import Firm Data from RTG Bills Online

You will see the Import Firm Data from RTG Bills Online window. Click Browse to locate the firmdata.zip file. Open the Documents folder. Open the ConvertToPC folder. Open the data_out folder. Choose firmdata.zip, which should be the only available choice at that point. Click Open.

The Import Firm Data . . . window reappears, with the path to the ZIP file now entered into the box. Click Import.

Confirm that you want to replace all existing RTG Bills data with imported data. After a pause while the data is read, a message should say the import is complete. Click OK.

The data from RTG Bills Online is now in RTG Bills on the PC.

• RTG Timer data is not converted.
• Bill formats are not converted.
• Email settings are not converted.
• RTG Bills Online has a retainer disbursed transaction type, which is not available on the PC. A retainer refund is created instead.
• Fee allocation reports may be incorrect because the PC version requires the date and time of each bill and payment transaction, but the online system does not record that information.
• The PC version does not have the OAuth2 authentication method recommended by Gmail to send bills to clients.
