    Download problems?
Anti-virus programs, or the wrong Internet Options setting, can cause download problems.

  2. Wait patiently while the file is copied across the Internet to your computer (that's what "download" means).

  3. RTG Bills install icon When the download is complete, you must find the file bills.exe, either on the Desktop or in the Downloads folder. It may appear as bills, without the .exe extension. This file is the installer software.

If you are having trouble finding the file, type Ctrl-J (Chrome, Edge, or Firefox) to display a list of downloads.

Start bills.exe to install RTG Bills and RTG Timer. To start it, double-click the icon (or the file name in a list). As an alternative, you can right-click and choose Open.

  4. Windows Smartscreen may display a message that it "prevented an unrecognized app from starting." Click More info. For RTG Bills & RTG Timer, it will show:
    App: bills.exe
    Publisher: RTG Data Systems
Click Run anyway if you want to install RTG Bills and RTG Timer.

  5. Follow the instructions to complete the installation.

The installer will offer to install the programs in

    C:\Program Files\Rtgbills

    for 32-bit Windows, or

    C:\Program Files (x86)\Rtgbills

for 64-bit Windows, and we recommend that you accept this suggestion.

The installer will offer to install the data in a separate location. This is required because Windows won't allow programs to store data in the Program Files folder.

    The suggested data location is:

    C:\ProgramData\RTG\RTG Bills\

However, on a network, the suggested location is not correct. The data must be in a shared folder accessible to other computers. To install the software on a network, please read the Network Installation Instructions for further details.

Warning: Do not move the RTG Bills data files during the trial period. If you do, the trial period will terminate and you will need a license key to continue to use RTG Bills.

Tutorials

To get you started using RTG Bills and RTG Timer, we created a tutorial for each program. The tutorial gives you step-by-step instructions for entering information into the programs and for printing bills and reports.

To view the tutorial, start RTG Bills or RTG Timer. Choose Help > Tutorial from the menu.

The tutorials are Web-formatted documents that you read with your Web browser. You can also use the browser to print the tutorial if you wish.

Technical note: The RTG Bills tutorial is the file Tutorb.htm and the RTG Timer tutorial is the file Tutort.htm. You can find them in the folder where you installed the program.

The tutorials include instructions for entering "fake" data. Instructions are also included for deleting this fake data at the end of the tutorial, so you are ready to enter real data.

Some of the data you enter into the RTG Bills tutorial is needed for the RTG Timer tutorial. The RTG Bills tutorial will tell you when to switch to the RTG Timer tutorial.

Licensing the
software

If you would like to continue using RTG Bills after the 45-day trial period, you must pay for a license. When we receive your payment, we will send you a license key. Choose Setup > Licensed User in RTG Bills to enter the name of the licensed user and the license key.

The RTG Bills license key does not expire.

However, the license key is only good for a specific version of RTG Bills. If you want to upgrade to a newer version, you will need a new license key. See Upgrading RTG Bills.

We recommend that you always use the latest version of RTG Bills, but you don't have to upgrade if you don't want to. You can continue to use the same version indefinitely.

Uninstalling the
software

A standard uninstall program is provided, should you choose not to continue using RTG Bills and RTG Timer.

The uninstall program will delete most of the RTG Bills and RTG Timer files. However, it leaves files that you may have changed or created: the RTG Bills and RTG Timer databases, bill formats, shorthand codes, and so on.

To see where the data files are located, view the System Information report in RTG Bills or RTG Timer. The Data Location is where the data files are stored. If you do not plan to license the software, you can delete the entire folder and all the files in it.
