R030702: Removing The Billing Summary From Bills

Layout

Layout is a program supplied with RTG Bills. It can make more extensive changes to the bill formats than the choices available from within RTG Bills. More information about Layout is here.

This article provides step-by-step instructions for using Layout to remove the Billing Summary from a bill format.

After you change a bill format with Layout, you cannot use the formatting features of RTG Bills to make further changes. So first make as many changes as possible in RTG Bills, then use Layout for the additional changes which only it can handle.

 

Instructions

These instructions were created for RTG Bills Version 2.15. The details for other versions may differ.

  1. To start Layout from within RTG Bills, choose:

    File > Tools > Layout (custom bill formatter) > OK

  2. In the RTG Layout window, click on the bill format you want to change. Then click Edit.
    We are assuming that you have already created a bill format, using Setup > Bill Formats in RTG Bills, that looks exactly the way you want, except that it contains the Billing Summary. The only change we will make with Layout is to remove the Billing Summary.
  3. In the Edit A Bill Format window, click the Edit Sections button.

  4. In the Edit A Section window, choose the Matter footer section of the bill from the drop-down list. This is section 19. Note that the section number appears on the right side of the window, below the Help button.

  5. Scroll down through the list of instructions until you find these three rows:
    916 New page if fewer than 7 lines left
    907 Print section A
    901 Line feeds
    Click on the first of these lines, code 916, and click the Edit Row button.

  6. In the Edit A Row window, leave Special selected and choose Skip from the drop-down list. Click Close.

  7. You are back at the Edit A Section window. You should now see these three lines:
    905 Skip
    907 Print section A
    901 Line feeds
    The code 916 has been replaced by 905. The result will be that the bill format will skip the "Print section A" instruction, which means that the Billing Summary will not be printed.

    Click on the third line, code 901, and click the Edit Row button.

  8. In the Edit A Row window, leave Special selected and choose End skip from the drop-down list. Click Close.

  9. You are back at the Edit A Section window. You should now see these three lines:
    905 Skip
    907 Print section A
    906 End skip
    When you have completed these changes, click the Close button. At the Edit A Bill Format window, click View to see what the bill will look like.

  10. Click Save to save your changes. Click Yes to the warning that the standard bill formatter will not be able to change this format. Click Close to exit the Layout program.

Now that you have created the new bill format, you must edit the matter to tell it to use this bill format. This setting is on the Billing-1 tab of the Edit A Matter window.
