Change account type

Q: I created a matter-level retainer for a matter. Now I have a new matter for the same client and they want to use the same retainer for both matters. Can I change the account from a matter-level account to a client-level account?

A: No, you can't change the account type from matter-level to client-level. Instead, create a new client-level account and transfer the balance from the matter-level account to the new client-level account.

Transferring the balance requires two transactions: a retainer refund to get the balance from the matter-level account and a separate Retainer transaction to put the same amount in the client-level account.

Be sure to edit each matter and, on the Retainer tab, make sure you are using the new client-level account if you have selected accounts for the Standard Retainer Account and the Automatic Payments accounts.
