Windows Vista and RTG Software |
|
|
|
| Overview |
|
|
Windows Vista required certain changes to RTG's software. There were two main issues:
- Program Files
Vista does not allow programs to write in the Program Files folder. RTG Bills, RTG Timer, and RTG Conflicts all did that.
- Help files
Vista does not support the type of help files that RTG's software was using.
For these reasons, compatibility with Windows Vista required new versions of RTG's software.

|
Compatible Versions |
|
|
The following list shows the first versions of RTG's software that are compatible with Windows Vista:
RTG Bills and RTG Timer V2.17
RTG Conflicts V1.02
RTG Timer HE V2.09
RTG Timer ME V2.08
RTG Scripts V1.09
RTG E-Bills V1.12
RTG Names V2.03
It is important to note that these new versions work together, and most of them will not work with older versions of the software in this list.
If you upgrade RTG Bills to V2.17, you must also upgrade all of the other programs in this list to the version shown here (or a later version). For example, RTG E-Bills V1.12 works properly with RTG Bills V2.17, but earlier versions of RTG E-Bills will not work.
RTG Conflicts does not require the use of RTG Bills. However, if you upgrade RTG Conflicts to V1.02, and you want to import data into Conflicts from Bills, you will need RTG Bills V2.17 (or a later version).

Moving RTG Bills to Vista |
|
|
Most people will get Windows Vista on a new computer. Moving RTG Bills is easy.
The basic idea is simple. You install RTG Bills (V2.17 or above) on the new computer, back up the data on the old computer, and restore the data on the new computer.
The RTG Bills and RTG Timer program files should always be installed in this standard location on the new computer:
C:\Program Files\Rtgbills
The RTG Bills and RTG Timer data files should be installed in a shared location on the network, if you have a network, or in this standard location on your new computer if you do not have a network:
C:\ProgramData\RTG\RTG Bills
Use File > Backup to back up the data files on the old computer. Copy the two backup files (bills.rbi and bills.zip) to the new computer. Use File > Restore From Backup to restore the data files on the new computer.
See Moving To A New Computer for more detailed instructions. It also lists some data folders that are not copied by the backup feature in RTG Bills.

| RTG Upgrade |
|
|
RTG Upgrade is used to install optional features and minor program updates. Many upgrades change the program files, which ordinary programs cannot do under Vista.
In order to install an upgrade under Vista, you must right-click the program (Bills, Timer, or Conflicts) and choose Run as administrator. Then you can choose
File > Upgrade > Yes
from within the program to start RTG Upgrade.
If you don't use Run as administrator to start the program, you will get an error message, Cannot start RTG Upgrade, when you try to upgrade.
