Upgrading from Softfile 2 to Softfile 3
(S021201)

If you have a previous version of Softfile 3, there is no special upgrade procedure. Softfile will recognize and use your existing data.

However, if you were previously using Softfile 2 (a DOS program), you must convert your data into the format used by Softfile 3 (a Windows program). Follow these steps:

  1. Look in the folder where you installed Softfile 2 (the DOS program) and find the database file, soft.dat. Copy this file into the folder where you installed Softfile 3, which will be C:\Program Files\Softw unless you changed it.

  2. Download the conversion program, sfconvert.exe, into the folder where Softfile 3 is installed:

Click here to download the conversion program

  3. Double-click the file sfconvert.exe to start the conversion program. Click the Convert button. This part of the conversion should be very quick.

  4. Double-click the Softfile icon on the desktop, or choose Start>Programs>Softfile>Softfile. You should see your Softfile home page (previously referred to as the initial record). Do not change anything.

Choose File>Rebuild Word Index from the menu. Click Yes to proceed. Click the Index button.

This process can take a long time. Each word in the database is added to the word indexes.

  5. The conversion process is complete. The old database, soft.dat, which is unchanged, is no longer needed. The new database is soft.sdb, where SDB stands for Softfile DataBase.
Notes
  1. Your old numbered links have been converted to a line of links at the bottom of each page.

  2. There is a minor change in the way words are indexed. Previously, if a "word" contained an ampersand with no spaces around it (e.g., good&bad), it was indexed without the ampersand (as goodbad). Now the ampersand separates the two parts into two words (good and bad).
