RTG Bills Q: Do I need RTG Bills in order to use RTG Timer Online?

A: Strictly speaking, you don't. A Supervisor can enter clients, matters, timekeepers, and codes directly into RTG Timer Online. If you just want to track your time, you can do that without RTG Bills.

However, if you want to bill your time, you will probably want to use RTG Bills.

Clients, matters, timekeepers, and codes entered into RTG Bills can be uploaded to RTG Timer Online. Released fees and expenses can be downloaded and read into RTG Bills for billing. The two are designed to work together. See How It Works.

Linux version Q: Is there a Linux version of RTG Timer Online?

A: No special version is required. RTG Timer Online works well on Linux using the Mozilla Firefox browser.

Since there is no software installed on the computer, the operating system (Windows or Linux) does not matter. What does matter is the Web browser. We test RTG Timer Online with current versions of Mozilla Firefox and Microsoft Internet Explorer.

Please note that RTG Bills only works on Windows PCs, so if you are using RTG Bills for billing, you need at least one PC with Windows to run RTG Bills.
Users vs. timekeepers Q: Is a user the same thing as a timekeeper?

A: No. A user is a person who uses RTG Timer Online. A timekeeper is a person whose time is being tracked.

An attorney who enters his or her own time is both a user and a timekeeper. However, a legal assistant who only enters time for attorneys is a user but not a timekeeper.

A subscription to RTG Timer Online for one timekeeper is $8.95 per month. It does not limit the number of users who can enter that person's time and expenses. As the number of timekeepers increases, the incremental cost for each timekeeper is less.

Both users and timekeepers must be registered with RTG. That means that RTG will enter the user and timekeeper information into the RTG Timer Online database.

In order for RTG Bills to read RTG Timer Online data, you also need an RTG Timer license for each timekeeper. When you purchase RTG Bills, you get one RTG Timer license. Additional RTG Timer licenses can be purchased for a small one-time fee.

Requirements Q: What are the system requirements for RTG Timer Online?

A: In brief, there are two requirements:
  1. A recommended Web browser
  2. The current version of RTG Bills
1. Web browser
Because RTG Timer Online works exclusively in your Web browser, the requirements have to do with the browser itself, not your computer.

We have tested RTG Timer Online with the following browsers:
  • Mozilla Firefox 2.0 on Windows and Linux
  • Internet Explorer 7 on Windows
Others may work, but they have not been tested.

In addition, the browser settings must permit the following features to work:
  1. JavaScript
JavaScript is a feature that allows our software to work inside your browser. (Microsoft calls it active scripting.)

  2. Cookies
Cookies are small chunks of information stored temporarily on your computer by the software. They allow the software to remember that you have signed in and to know what you are doing as you move from page to page.

  3. Pop-Up Windows
Every page has a Help button or Help link to provide context-sensitive help. The help information is presented in a pop-up window, so you can see the help text, and the page it refers to, at the same time.
Sometimes people turn off these features because they fear malicious software will abuse them. However, modern browsers should keep you safe while allowing each feature to work.

2. RTG Bills
Strictly speaking, you do not need RTG Bills. See RTG Bills in this FAQ. Nevertheless, we expect most users of RTG Timer Online will use RTG Bills to enter clients, matters, timekeepers, and codes, and to read the data collected by RTG Timer Online.

You should always use the current version of RTG Bills.

RTG always offers at least one free online upgrade, from the previous version to the current version of RTG Bills, to encourage every firm to use the current version. Choose File > Upgrade in RTG Bills to begin the upgrade process.

In order for RTG Bills to read RTG Timer Online data, you need an RTG Timer license for each timekeeper. See Users vs. timekeepers in this FAQ.
Change timekeepers Q: How do I change the number of timekeepers?

A: You can add or remove timekeepers, which will adjust the subscription price of the next payment. See Change Subscription to RTG Timer Online.

If you are adding a timekeeper, you will need to contact RTG and tell us the timekeeper number of the new timekeeper. If you are removing a timekeeper, you can delete the timekeeper from the Supervisor Menu in RTG Timer Online.
