  Solving Installation Problems
Overview

Usually RTG Bills and RTG Timer can be installed with no problems. We currently use Inno Setup, a high-quality installation program for installing Windows software.

Sometimes, however, either the programs won't install properly or, after a normal installation, they won't run correctly. This page is designed to help you find and correct the problem so you can install and use RTG Bills and RTG Timer.

Troubleshooting procedure Try the following:
  1. Disable anti-virus software
Programs that run all the time, especially anti-virus software, can cause installation problems. Exit the program while you get RTG Bills installed. If you have other programs that run all the time, exit those as well.

Note: By far, this is the most common cause of installation problems.

  2. Exit RTG Bills
Make sure no other computer (on a network) is running RTG Bills while you are trying to install it.

  3. Check permissions
If you are installing RTG Bills on another computer over a network, check that you have permission to read and write to the folder where you are trying to install the program. Try copying a small file into that folder to check that you have write permission. You should be able to see the file in the folder, and you should be able to copy it back out to your computer.

  4. Check hard disk
Double-click My Computer, then right-click your hard disk drive and choose Properties. On the Tools tab, click Check Now. If this is your C drive, where Windows is installed, the check will be done the next time you restart the computer.

  5. Try to install
Try again to install RTG Bills. If it fails again, go to the next step for more extreme measures.

  6. Delete RTG Bills folder
If you have any data in a previous installation of RTG Bills, copy it elsewhere now. We are going to delete the program and all its files.

Be very careful here! If you have ever installed RTG Bills V2.16 or earlier, it is possible that your programs and data are in the same location. If you delete the program folder, you may delete the data as well. So be sure you have it backed up first.

Find the folder where you have installed RTG Bills. Usually this is C:\Program Files\Rtgbills. Delete the entire Rtgbills folder. (You did back up your data, right?)

  7. Try to install again
Once again, try to install RTG Bills. Install the program to the suggested folder, C:\Program Files\Rtgbills, even if you really want it to be elsewhere.

If the installation succeeds, and the program works correctly, congratulations!

If you really want the program to be elsewhere, uninstall RTG Bills and install again in the location you prefer.
What else could it be?

If you still can't install the program, or it installs but does not run properly, you have a very unusual situation!

There could be another program running that interferes with RTG Bills. Be sure to exit all other programs while you install and test RTG Bills.

Even when you think nothing else is running, Windows is running other programs! In Windows 2000/XP/Vista, right-click on the taskbar and choose Task Manager. The Task Manager can show you all the (otherwise invisible) "processes" that are running. One of them could be the problem.

You may need a local Windows expert to help you figure out which program is at fault and to remove it for you. Perhaps the names will jog your memory and you'll recall that you installed some little utility that does something or other. That's the one to remove.
