More than one firm

Q: Can I use one copy of RTG Bills for more than one law firm?

A: Each RTG Bills license lets you use the software on one computer or network. The license does not restrict the number of users or the number of firms.

However, RTG Bills was primarily designed to handle a single firm. To use RTG Bills for more than one firm, you need to create a separate RTG Bills database for each firm, in a different folder on your hard disk. You can do this by installing RTG Bills more than once. Each time, specify the same program location but a different data location.

For example, under Windows Vista or Windows 7, you should install the programs in C:\Program Files\Rtgbills, and you might install the data in these two locations:

C:\ProgramData\RTG\RTG Bills1
C:\ProgramData\RTG\RTG Bills2

You must switch between these data locations to work on the two different firms. There are two ways you can do that:

1. Start RTG Bills, change the database location (Setup > Database), and save the change.  RTG Bills will exit, and when you start it again, it will be using the specified database.

2. Create a separate Windows user for each firm.  Then you can switch Windows users (Start > Log Off > Switch User in Windows XP) to change firms.  This works because RTG Bills remembers the database location separately for each Windows user.

Note:
Prior to RTG Bills Version 2.17, the programs and data had to be in the same location. You could set up two firms by having the program (and its data) installed in two different locations. Which copy of the program you started would determine which data it would use. This method no longer works in V2.17 and above.

However, Versions 2.21 and above have a similar capability. Different icons can start different copies of RTG Bills or RTG Timer. It requires some computer expertise to set it up. See More than one firm in RTG Bills.
